About The Gates Scholarship: Starting in 2018, The Gates Scholarship has been granting financial support to 300 students annually, with a total goal of aiding 3,000 students throughout the program’s duration. This initiative is a part of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s long-standing commitment to supporting exceptional minority students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The scholarship program’s primary goal is to break financial barriers and empower high-potential, low-income minority students to excel in their studies and graduate successfully.
Benefits of The Gates Scholarship: Selected scholars will receive funding for the entire cost of attendance that is not already covered by other financial aid and expected family contributions, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the college/university’s methodology.
The cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, room and board, books, transportation, and other personal expenses.
Requirements to Apply: To be eligible for The Gates Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a high school senior
- Belong to at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American
- Be Pell-eligible
- Be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident
- Maintain good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
- Plan to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a US-accredited, not-for-profit, private, or public college or university.
*For American Indian/Alaska Native applicants, proof of tribal enrollment will be required.
Ideal Candidate Traits: The Gates Scholarship seeks candidates with the following qualities:
- An outstanding academic record in high school (being in the top 10% of their graduating class)
- Demonstrated leadership abilities through community service, extracurricular activities, or other engagements
- Exceptional personal success skills, such as emotional maturity, motivation, and perseverance.
