A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – which might not be its final title – will roar onto your TV in late 2025

The next spin-off series from Game of Thrones, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” is on its way, and it might unfold in winter. According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, the show is slated for a late 2025 launch (as reported by IGN).

While Zaslav did not commit to a specific launch date, the show’s title remains somewhat uncertain. Alternatives such as ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ or ‘The Hedge Knight’ have been under consideration. Nevertheless, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ seems to be the prevailing favorite, and it has garnered positive anticipation.

During an earnings call with investors, Zaslav stated, “George R.R. Martin is in pre-production for the new spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will premiere in late 2025 on Max.”

What is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms about?

As for the storyline, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg books. It revolves around the characters Ser Duncan The Tall and a young Aegon V Targaryen, set a century before the events of Game of Thrones. The official synopsis describes it as, “Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Part of an expansive Westeros cinematic universe, which includes the current House of the Dragon Season 2 and potential animated shows, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to join the lineup. Author George R.R. Martin shared on his blog that HBO and Martin have been exploring animated projects, including Nine Voyages, originally conceived as a live-action series. While House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are live-action, potential animated shows are under consideration due to both the creative advantages of animation and the potential cost-effectiveness compared to elaborate fantasy productions involving CGI and sets.

Martin noted, “Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version [of Nine Voyages] prohibitively expensive… there’s a whole world out there, and we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation.”

Who will be in the cast?

While casting details for the series are still under wraps, the actors eventually chosen to portray Dunk and Egg can anticipate a transformative impact on their lives. The initial Game of Thrones series propelled numerous previously unknown actors into A-list celebrity status, and House of the Dragon has emerged as a comparable catalyst for career advancement. A case in point is Milly Alcock, who portrayed the younger Princess Rhaenyra; she has recently secured the role of Supergirl in the newly rebooted DCU, underscoring the series’ influence as a significant stepping stone for emerging talent.

When is the release date?

Though A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is still more than a year away, anticipation is mounting for House of the Dragon Season 2, expected to debut in mid-2024, possibly in August, featuring eight episodes compared to the initial season’s ten.  Currently in the pre-production phase, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is gearing up for its debut, as confirmed by HBO’s David Zaslav. The series is set to premiere on Max in late 2025. Check out the teaser trailer below for a glimpse of what’s to come.
